It's All Relative

Leatherwood Yates Reunion 2011

Sweltering describes this year's Leatherwood Reunion but that didn't keep this group from enjoying their time together.    This year's reunion included a visit from distant cousin Pat Williams whose Grandfather Jack Yates was Brother to John Yates, Grandfather of Amy, Gray, Wanda and Loretta. There was an expedition to see the secluded cave where Jack Hinson lived during the turbulent Civil War Era and where he delivered his brand of justice for war atrocities.  A few trekked to Orchard Hill Cemetery to see where the ancestors of Aileen Tomlinson Yates are buried.  The fishing was good this year as evidenced by the massive fish fry held on Friday.  Attendance was good but we missed those who were unable to be with us.    Several families had four generations represented again this year.   Leatherwood 2011, a great reunion for the Yates descendants.

Birthdays Are The Best!  May 2011

Birthdays are the best when you're a kid.  We recently attended the First Birthday Party for Nolan.   Ashley and Wayne know how to entertain.  Barbeque, Birthday Cake and Kids, a winning combination.  Nolan received a big, big container of balls for his kiddy pool and was soon sharing his space with about 6 tykes.  Great evening with some great people.  Hope we get an invite next year!

Lovely Easter Weekend at the Yates House

The little kids (Great Grandkids) were absent from our celebration this weekend but the big kids kept us entertained.  As usual there was an abundance of food.  On this occasion, I decided to bring a dish, new to our family, Edamame.  It's immature soy beans and yeah, you're right, it wasn't a favorite.  Elaine brought wild turkey, but not the kind you may be thinking. Seems a friend's daughter had shot the thing and given it to Elaine to prepare.  I didn't try it, prefer my turkey prepackaged with lots of preservatives.  After lunch the kids entertained us with a game of headbanz.  Here Liz is trying to determine if she is an animal, vegetable or mineral.   She was a sheep.  We enjoyed our time together and hope all the relatives enjoyed their family time as well.

Drew, Abby & Friends
Drew, Abby & Friends
Thanks for the update and doing the website.  Abby lost her first tooth on the 12th of April.  She turned six on March 25th and is loving kindergarten.  She is learning to read, and will sit and read and draw pictures for hours.  She has decided she will be a teacher when she grows up.  Abby is playing softball again and loves the social aspect of it as much as the playing.  Abby finished the basketball season in February and she is no globetrotter but she has mean guarding skills.  It is so funny to watch those little ones.  Drew is busy as well. He played basketball as well and had a really good season.  He plays middle school golf and in the band and loves his trumpet.  Drew also takes some lessons through the high school coach in basketball trying to fine tune some of his basketball skills.  Drew has done really well in middle school and placed 3rd in the local math competition. He will be going to Austin Peay for the math competition in the fall.  He does well in school and continues to make mom and dad proud.  Drew has a busy summer planned,  Leatherwood for a week, then Boy Scout Camp for a week, then a week at the ocean.  We are then going to let him stay home for a week and then off to church camp for another week.  Angie is as  busy as ever.  She just passed her last test and has earned her Library Science Degree.  She would like to be the school librarian when the opportunity arises.  She is still scrapbooking when she get a few minutes, and is preparing for one of her weekend scrap- booking retreats in two weeks.  Angie is teaching 3rd grade this year and finally has decided she likes it.  She taught 1st grade for 17 years and then they decided they needed her teaching abilities for the TCAP scores.  She had a rough and rocky start because she didn't want to change grades, but as I said she now likes it.  Well last is Craig ~  staying very busy with work and all the activities that the kids stay involved with: basketball, band, softball, and golf.  I also help coach Abby's softball team and love working with those little girls.
We went to the mountains over Spring break and enjoyed some time with the kids and Angie's parents, Ron and Judy Johnson.  We enjoyed the scenes, shows, and shopping.  I think Drew enjoyed the nightly Rook game in which he learned to play Rook and he and grandpa beat his Momma and grammie 7 out of 10 games.  Yes a lot of smack talking going on.  We are looking forward to going to Leatherwood for our annual trip and look forward to see all the cousins.  We are also looking forward to our trip to Perdido Beach June 18-25.  Some friends of ours are going with us Kane, Kim, Kinlee and Kara Hagewood,  they have two girls about Abby's age and we are letting Drew take our preacher’s son, Colton (Uncle Tom named him  4 foot Clyde) with us as well. We look forward to seeing all of you at the lake soon.  Craig and Family

Tom recently changed jobs within the Lowe's Company.  Earlier this year, Lowe's eliminated 1700 Operations Manager positions in stores throughout the U.S.   Tom was one of those whose position was eliminated however he is staying with the Dickson Store as a manager in the lumber and tool departments.  Not as much responsibility and not as much stress.
Sherry is beginning her 31st year with Dickson Housing Authority and works as Financial Officer.  When she's not on the computer, she is gardening, cooking and staying involved with various projects at church and with the Civitan Club.
Jennifer continues her nursing courses and this semester traveled to a hospital in Paris, TN once a week for clinicals.  She has worked in the emergency room some this semester and liked the fast pace.  Next semester will include work in pediatrics.   Allison will begin the nursing program at Tenn. Tech next fall.  This summer she is planning to return to Pigeon Forge for ten weeks to work on Summer Mountain Project in the Smoky Mountains.

Grady Yates Family -

Grady, Donna and family recently purchased a slightly used, slighty damaged (from last May's Floods) lake house on the Cumberland River just above Cheatham dam.  This picture is a view of the opposite side of the river and was taken from their dock.  The damage to the house was extensive but with hard work, Grady and Donna are revitalizing this little retreat.  A massive catfish ( 39" long) was recently  plucked from the water near their dock.  To see more pictures of their lake home go to the photo gallery.
Donna spends a good amount of her time tending to her mom and kids.  Conner is beginning to take a step or two.  Faith recently completed Color Guard Competitions in which her team placed 2nd in the state and 4th in the region.  The color guard held a fund raiser recently and Granny and Pa participated.  Granny donated homemade sourdough bread and Pa donated a handmade walking cane.   Bill is preparing for the prom and then graduation.
Life certainly moves at a rapid pace for this family.
